Canon's first-generation APS-C telephoto zoom with IS, before the STM and II updates.
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS is the original version of Canon's popular APS-C telephoto zoom, launched around 2007. Covering an 88-400mm equivalent range with image stabilisation, it provided affordable telephoto reach for Canon crop-sensor DSLRs.
Optical quality is good for a consumer telephoto with respectable sharpness across the range. IS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. Autofocus uses a DC micro-motor that is functional but noisy and slow. Build is all-plastic and lightweight.
Canon EF-S mount only, 58mm filter thread. Three subsequent versions improved on this: the IS II with updated optics, the IS STM with a quiet stepping motor, and the current model. The IS STM is the version to buy.
Very cheap used. Check IS operation and AF motor. Any of the later versions are better investments. This original IS version is adequate for casual telephoto use but the IS STM at a modest premium is dramatically better for both stills and video.
