Canon's first-generation APS-C telephoto zoom with IS, before the STM and II updates.
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS is the original IS version of Canon's APS-C telephoto kit zoom, introduced in November 2007. It was the first Canon EF-S 55-250mm to include Image Stabilisation, and was widely bundled with mid-range APS-C DSLRs of the era. It was succeeded by the IS II (2011) with a revised optical grouping and improved IS consistency, and the IS STM (2014) which replaced the DC micro-motor with Canon's stepping motor for video use.
The optical design uses 12 elements in 10 groups, including one UD element. The 58mm filter thread is consistent across all Canon EF-S 55-250mm versions, making filter carry-over practical between kit generations. At 390g the lens is manageable for outdoor and travel use paired with an entry-level Canon DSLR body. Minimum focus distance of 1.1m suits the telephoto use case. IS provides approximately 4 stops of shake compensation, effective for static and slow-moving telephoto subjects handheld. The DC micro-motor AF is functional but audible during operation; it is not suited for video recording. Build is lightweight plastic with a metal mount ring.
For standard APS-C telephoto use the 55-250mm IS covers the 88-400mm equivalent range adequately — outdoor events, wildlife, and travel subjects at moderate distance. IS is effective for static subjects; at 250mm handheld shots in adequate light are practical with IS engaged. Optical quality is acceptable at mid-apertures; softening at 250mm wide open is typical for consumer telephoto zooms at this price tier. The DC motor AF rules out video use.
On the used market the original IS is the least expensive Canon EF-S 55-250mm variant. The IS II provides the same IS rating with a revised optical grouping; the IS STM provides quiet video AF. Both upgrades are typically available at modest premiums. Condition checks: IS engagement, DC motor AF response, zoom ring smoothness. The 58mm filter thread is consistent with the EF-S 18-55mm and other kit lenses. Compatible with all Canon APS-C EOS DSLRs and via EF-RF adapter on RF-mount bodies.
