Canon's mid-range APS-C telephoto zoom with IS but without the STM motor.
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II was introduced in 2011 as an updated version of Canon's entry-level APS-C telephoto kit zoom, with revised Image Stabilisation rated at approximately 4 stops. On APS-C bodies the 88-400mm equivalent range extends the standard 18-55mm kit zoom's reach substantially, covering wildlife, outdoor events, and sports at a price accessible to entry-level DSLR owners. A further update — the IS STM version (2014) — replaced the DC micro-motor with Canon's stepping motor for quieter video autofocus.
The optical design uses 12 elements in 9 groups, including one UD element. The 58mm filter thread is shared with the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens variants, making filter carry-over practical across a standard two-lens Canon APS-C setup. At approximately 390g the lens adds moderate weight to a kit body. Minimum focus distance of 1.1m suits the telephoto use case — the primary subjects of wildlife and outdoor events are typically well beyond this point. IS provides approximately 4 stops of compensation, effective for static and slow-moving telephoto subjects handheld. The DC micro-motor AF is functional but audible — not suited for video recording. Build is lightweight plastic with a metal mount ring.
For the standard telephoto extension of a Canon APS-C kit, the 55-250mm IS II covers the most common situations adequately — distant wildlife, outdoor sports, and travel subjects at the 88-400mm equivalent range. IS at 4 stops is effective for static subjects; at 250mm handheld shots in adequate light are practical with IS engaged. Optical quality is good through the mid-range but softens at 250mm wide open — typical at this price tier. The DC motor AF is the limiting factor for video use; for stills AF is responsive and reliable.
On the used market the IS II is widely available at low prices. The IS STM version provides a quieter stepping motor suited to video at a modest premium — the recommended choice for new purchases or users prioritising video. The IS II is adequate for stills-only telephoto use. Condition checks: IS engagement, zoom ring smoothness, and AF motor response at both focal length extremes. The 58mm filter thread is consistent with most Canon APS-C kit lenses. Compatible with all Canon APS-C EOS DSLRs and via EF-EOS R adapter on RF-mount bodies.
