Canon's mid-range APS-C telephoto zoom with IS but without the STM motor.
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II is the second generation of Canon's APS-C telephoto zoom, launched in 2011. Covering an 88-400mm equivalent range, it provides useful telephoto reach with image stabilisation. It was commonly bundled as the second lens in twin-lens DSLR kits alongside an 18-55mm.
Optical quality is good for the price with respectable sharpness across the range, dropping off somewhat above 200mm. IS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. Autofocus uses a DC micro-motor that is functional but audible and not ideal for video. Build is all-plastic and lightweight.
Canon EF-S mount only, 58mm filter thread. The crucial upgrade is the IS STM version which adds a stepping motor for near-silent autofocus. The IS II uses a noisier DC motor. The EF 75-300mm III offers more reach on full-frame but is optically inferior.
Cheap used. Check IS operation and AF motor response. The IS STM version is worth seeking out for its quieter autofocus, especially for video. This lens offers vastly better image quality than the EF 75-300mm III at a similar price point.
