Canon's best-selling mirrorless camera with 4K video, EVF, and vlogging-friendly design.
The Canon EOS M50 was released in February 2018 as Canon's mid-tier EOS M APS-C mirrorless body, introducing Dual Pixel CMOS AF and 4K video to the EOS M lineup. It was the first EOS M camera to support 4K recording. The 4K mode applies a significant additional crop beyond the APS-C sensor area — approximately 1.6x extra — producing a very narrow field of view in 4K that requires wide-angle lenses for practical coverage. DPAF provides smooth continuous AF tracking in live view and 1080p video.
The 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF. The DPAF system provides 143 AF points for smooth continuous tracking in live view and video modes. Burst shooting runs at 10fps with AFS and 7.4fps with AFC. 4K video records at 24fps with an additional ~1.6x crop beyond APS-C; 1080p records without additional crop using DPAF for smooth continuous tracking. Battery life approximately 235 shots using the LP-E12, body weight approximately 387g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The M50's practical strengths are the DPAF for smooth 1080p video AF and the compact, affordable EOS M body. For photographers who primarily shoot 1080p video, the DPAF tracking is the key practical feature. The 4K mode's significant additional crop limits its practical usefulness for most subjects — wide-angle shooting in 4K is particularly constrained. The LP-E12 battery's 235-shot CIPA rating is low; a spare battery is advisable for any extended shooting session.
On the used market the M50 is affordable as an entry EOS M body with DPAF. Canon has ceased development of new EF-M lenses — the EF-M ecosystem dead-end is the systemic consideration for any EOS M purchase. The M50 Mark II (2020) improved the EVF and added Eye Detection AF at a modest premium. Condition checks: DPAF operation in live view video mode, LP-E12 battery health, and screen for marks. Compatible with all Canon EF-M lenses; EF and EF-S lenses via the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.
