Canon's best-selling mirrorless camera with 4K video, EVF, and vlogging-friendly design.
The Canon EOS M50 launched in 2018 and became Canon's best-selling mirrorless camera of all time. With a 24.1MP APS-C sensor, Dual Pixel AF, 4K video, and a compact vlog-friendly body with a built-in EVF and vari-angle touchscreen, it hit the sweet spot for content creators and enthusiast photographers.
Key features include the 24.1MP sensor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF with eye detection, 4K video with a heavy crop, vari-angle touchscreen, built-in EVF, pop-up flash, and Wi-Fi with Bluetooth. The body is compact and comfortable. 1080p video has no crop and excellent Dual Pixel AF tracking.
The M50 was a massive success for Canon and proved the demand for compact mirrorless with good video AF. It is criticised for the heavily cropped 4K and the subsequent discontinuation of the EOS M system which leaves it with no upgrade path. The M50 Mark II added minor improvements.
Good value used but the discontinued M system is the elephant in the room. Check the vari-angle screen, Dual Pixel AF in video, and EVF for dead pixels. For new buyers the Canon EOS R50 on the RF mount offers a similar experience with a future-proof mount.
