Canon's high-resolution mirrorless flagship with 8K video and 45MP sensor.
The Canon EOS R5 launched in 2020 as Canon's most ambitious mirrorless camera. With a 45MP sensor, 8K RAW internal video, 20fps burst, and revolutionary Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, it established Canon as the mirrorless leader after years of playing catch-up with Sony. It proved Canon's RF system could lead the industry.
Key features include the 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor, 8K 30fps RAW video and 4K 120fps, 20fps electronic and 12fps mechanical shutter, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with human, animal, and vehicle detection, 8-stop IBIS with compatible RF lenses, and dual card slots using CFexpress Type B plus SD.
The R5 is praised for combining high resolution, fast burst, and 8K video in one body — something no competitor matched at launch. It is criticised for overheating during extended 8K recording, which limits continuous video use. The R5 Mark II addressed this with improved thermal management.
Good value used as the R5 Mark II has reduced prices. Check shutter count, IBIS operation, overheating behaviour, and both card slots. The R5 remains an outstanding camera for stills and short-form video. For extended video the R5 Mark II or R5 C are better choices.
