Canon's high-resolution mirrorless flagship with 8K video and 45MP sensor.
The Canon EOS R5 was released in July 2020 as Canon's professional RF-mount flagship, combining 45MP resolution with 8K internal RAW video recording — the first Canon mirrorless body to offer 8K — alongside 4K up to 120fps and up to 8 stops of combined IBIS stabilisation. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 1053 automatic AF points covers the full sensor area with subject recognition for humans, animals, and vehicles. Dust and weather sealing is built throughout the magnesium alloy chassis.
The 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF II. The 1053 AF points cover the full sensor with subject recognition tracking. Electronic shutter burst runs at 20fps. 8K RAW records internally at up to 30fps; 4K records at up to 120fps for slow motion. The 5-axis IBIS cooperates with IS-equipped RF lenses for up to 8 stops combined. Weather sealing is built in throughout. Battery life approximately 320 shots via EVF and 490 shots via LCD using the LP-E6NH, body weight approximately 738g with battery and card, dual card slots (one CFexpress Type B and one SD UHS-II).
The R5's 45MP resolution and 8K video in a weather-sealed body at launch represented Canon's most capable RF body to that point. The 4K/120fps enables 5× slow motion at full 4K resolution. Up to 8-stop combined IBIS provides handheld stabilisation across the RF lens lineup. Early firmware limited 8K and 4K/HQ recording times in warm conditions — subsequent firmware updates improved thermal management. For primarily stills use the R5's combination of resolution, AF, and IBIS is one of the strongest in the RF system.
The R5 holds value as a versatile professional RF body. Condition checks: IBIS operation, both card slot contacts (CFexpress and SD), weather sealing at body seams, and LP-E6NH battery health. The R5 Mark II (2024) added a stacked sensor for improved burst and reduced thermal limitations at a higher price. The LP-E6NH is backward-compatible with LP-E6 and LP-E6N from Canon DSLR bodies. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount native lenses and EF/EF-S lenses via EF-RF adapter.
