Canon's flagship mirrorless with stacked sensor, 8K video, and AI autofocus.
The Canon EOS R5 Mark II was announced in July 2024 as a substantial upgrade to the original R5, centred on a new 45MP back-side illuminated stacked CMOS sensor. The stacked architecture enables 30fps electronic shutter with full Dual Pixel AF and AE tracking and significantly reduced rolling shutter distortion compared to the original R5's conventional BSI sensor. 8K/60fps RAW output and 4K from oversampled 8K readout establish it as Canon's reference body for high-resolution still and motion work in the RF system.
The 45MP full-frame BSI stacked CMOS sensor pairs with dual DIGIC X processors. Electronic shutter shoots at up to 30fps with full DPAF III tracking; mechanical shutter runs at 12fps. The 5-axis IBIS is rated at up to 8.5 stops combined with compatible RF lenses via Coordinated IS, incorporating Canon's new Peripheral Coordinated Control for reduced edge wobble. 4K records internally at up to 60fps oversampled from the 8K sensor readout; 8K at up to 60fps is available as RAW output. Body weight 746g with battery and card; dual card slots accept one CFexpress Type B and one SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II).
The stacked sensor's practical impact is most apparent in fast-action and subject-tracking use: 30fps with minimal rolling shutter artefacts enables sequences at frame rates previously achievable only with dedicated sports bodies. The 45MP resolution supports substantial post-production crop and large-format print. 8K RAW output opens cinema-grade production formats for motion work. IBIS at up to 8.5 stops combined is effective for handheld telephoto stills and video across the RF lens lineup. CFexpress Type B is required for the highest burst and video tiers.
The R5 Mark II holds value as Canon's current reference R-system body. CFexpress Type B cards are required for peak performance — budget for appropriate cards alongside the body. Condition checks: IBIS operation, both card slot contacts (CFexpress and SD), and shutter mechanism via EXIF count. The original R5 is available at lower used prices for photographers not needing stacked-sensor speed or 8K RAW. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount native lenses and EF lenses via EF-RF adapter.
