Canon's compact APS-C mirrorless with vlogging features and subject-detect AF.
The Canon EOS R50 was released in February 2023 as the upper-tier entry APS-C RF-S mirrorless body, positioned above the R100 with 651-point Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, 15fps mechanical burst, and 4K video oversampled from the full sensor. The DPAF II coverage and frame rate exceed what entry-level mirrorless competitors offered at the same price. A built-in electronic viewfinder distinguishes it from the R100 and content-creation competitors without EVFs.
The 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF II across 651 zones. Burst shooting runs at 15fps with mechanical shutter and 30fps with electronic shutter. 4K video records at up to 30fps oversampled from the full sensor. A built-in EVF provides optical framing. No weather sealing. Battery life approximately 390 shots using the LP-E17, body weight approximately 375g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The 651-point DPAF II at this price point was the R50's defining practical feature at launch: subject tracking for humans, animals, and vehicles across the full sensor area at a performance level previously limited to more expensive cameras. The 15fps mechanical / 30fps electronic burst covers casual action and sports. The 4K oversampled from full-sensor provides better detail than the 4K/24fps crop mode of the R100. The built-in EVF is absent on the R100.
On the used market the R50 is available at affordable RF-S mirrorless prices. Condition checks: DPAF II response for subject tracking, LP-E17 battery health, EVF condition, and screen for marks. The LP-E17 is shared with the EOS M6 II, M50, and RP. The Canon EOS R50 V (2025) addresses content creators with 4K/60fps and 10-bit at a similar price point but without the EVF. Compatible with all Canon RF and RF-S mount lenses.
