Nikon's standard APS-C kit zoom — bundled with millions of DX DSLRs, providing basic 27-82.5mm equivalent range.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED is Nikon's standard kit lens bundled with entry to mid-range DX-format DSLRs. Multiple versions exist — the AF-S motor ensures autofocus on all Nikon bodies including those without built-in AF motors.
Optical quality is adequate for a kit lens — sharp enough in the centre for general use but soft at the edges. ED glass helps control chromatic aberration. AF-S Silent Wave Motor provides quiet autofocus. Adequate for beginners who will eventually upgrade to better glass.
Nikon F mount, DX format only. 52mm filter thread. Weighs approximately 205g — very lightweight. No weather sealing. No VR stabilisation on the base version — the VR variants add stabilisation. Minimum focus distance 28cm. Plastic barrel and mount.
Extremely common used and essentially free — often included with camera bodies. The VR and VR II versions are better with stabilisation. The AF-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR is the modernised successor with stepping motor AF. Only use if it comes free with a camera purchase.
