Early Nikon DX kit zoom without VR, the most basic 18-55mm in the lineup.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II is an early version of Nikon's APS-C kit lens, introduced around 2005. It was bundled with bodies like the D40 and D60, covering the standard 27-82mm equivalent range. The ED designation indicates extra-low dispersion glass elements.
Optical quality is basic with adequate centre sharpness and soft corners. There is no VR stabilisation. The AF-S motor provides internal autofocus that works on all Nikon DX bodies including those without a built-in AF motor. Build is entirely plastic and lightweight.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 52mm filter thread. This was superseded by the VR, VR II, and AF-P versions which are all superior. The ED II is the most basic version without any stabilisation.
Essentially free on the used market. Only worth using if you have no other option. Any of the VR or AF-P versions are dramatically better. Check AF operation and zoom ring smoothness. The lens serves as a functional introduction to Nikon DX but should be upgraded as soon as practical.
