Nikon's first-generation stabilised DX kit zoom, capable and hugely common.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR is Nikon's first DX-format kit zoom with vibration reduction, introduced in 2007 as the standard bundle lens for entry-level and mid-range DX DSLRs including the D3100, D3200, D5100, and D90. It covers 27-82mm equivalent on the DX sensor. The AF-S designation indicates Nikon's Silent Wave Motor autofocus — near-silent, fast for the kit class, and providing full-time manual override with the AF switch on the camera body. VR I vibration reduction is rated at 4 stops. The optical formula uses 11 elements in 8 groups with one aspherical element. At approximately 265g with a 52mm filter thread, the lens is light and straightforward in construction. The barrel extends as the lens zooms toward 55mm.
Optical performance is typical for a DX kit zoom. Centre sharpness is adequate from f/5.6 across most of the zoom range, with the strongest results around 24-50mm equivalent. Corners are soft at wide apertures and improve stopped down to f/8. Barrel distortion at 18mm is measurable and pincushion at 55mm is moderate, both correctable in Nikon's in-camera processing and in major raw editors. Chromatic aberration is present in high-contrast scenes. The VR I system is effective for handheld work on static subjects at shutter speeds below 1/30s at 18mm, and provides useful latitude for available-light photography. Silent Wave Motor AF is near-silent and a practical operational advantage for everyday use.
Nikon F mount, DX format. The DX image circle produces strong vignetting when used on full-frame FX bodies — an FX crop mode is required on Nikon full-frame cameras. 52mm filter thread. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount DX and FX DSLRs, and with Nikon Z mirrorless cameras via the FTZ adapter with full AF and VR function. The AF-S DX VR II (2013) introduced a retractable barrel design that reduced the minimum package depth substantially; the original VR has a fixed barrel length at the wide end. The AF-P DX 18-55mm VR (2016) replaced the SWM motor with a stepping motor, improving continuous AF smoothness for video. Both successors are available used.
The AF-S DX VR is a reliable functional kit zoom available at low used prices. For photographers using D3100 through D5500-era DX bodies, it covers the standard focal range competently. The SWM AF is quiet enough for casual video use; the AF-P version is the better choice if video is a primary use. Before purchase, verify VR engages and operates smoothly, confirm SWM AF responds cleanly throughout the focal range, and check the zoom barrel action for smoothness. The AF-P DX 18-55mm VR is worth preferring over this version for users who primarily shoot video or need smooth continuous AF tracking.
