Nikon's first-generation stabilised DX kit zoom, capable and hugely common.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR is Nikon's first stabilised version of their APS-C kit lens, introduced in 2007. It bundled with bodies like the D3100, D5100, and D90, covering the standard 27-82mm equivalent range. The addition of Vibration Reduction marked a significant upgrade over the earlier non-VR versions.
Optical quality is typical for a kit lens with good centre sharpness, softer corners, and noticeable barrel distortion at 18mm. VR provides approximately 3 stops of shake reduction. The AF-S motor is reasonably quick and quiet. Build is plastic with a metal mount. The lens is compact and lightweight, well-matched to the DX bodies it ships with.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 52mm filter thread. The VR II version followed in 2014 with improved optics and a more compact retractable design. An AF-P version with a stepping motor succeeded both for video-capable bodies. The non-AF-S versions lack an internal motor and will not autofocus on entry-level Nikon bodies.
Very common and cheap used. Check VR operation which should be silent as grinding means worn parts, AF responsiveness, and zoom ring smoothness. The AF-P VR version is worth seeking out if your body supports it for better optics and smoother AF at similar money.
