Nikon's retractable second-gen DX kit zoom, more compact and slightly sharper than the VR I.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II, introduced in 2013, updated the original VR kit lens with a retractable barrel design — Nikon's first retractable lens — reducing the package depth substantially when the camera is powered down. It covers 27-82mm equivalent on DX-format cameras. The optical formula uses 11 elements in 8 groups with one aspherical element, unchanged from the VR I. Vibration reduction is rated at 4 stops. The AF-S designation indicates Silent Wave Motor autofocus, providing near-silent AF with full-time manual override. A 52mm filter thread is used. The retractable barrel requires a twist-unlock before the zoom ring operates, consistent with other compact retractable kit lenses of the era.
Optical performance is marginally stronger than the VR I, with slight improvements in corner performance across the zoom range. Centre sharpness is good from f/5.6 at most focal lengths. Barrel distortion at 18mm and pincushion at 55mm are typical for this focal range class, correctable in Nikon's in-camera processing and in major raw editors. Chromatic aberration is present in high-contrast scenes. The 4-stop VR system is effective for handheld work on static subjects at shutter speeds well below the focal-length reciprocal. Silent Wave Motor AF is near-silent and a clear operational advantage over non-SWM kit lenses. The lens produces strong vignetting on full-frame FX bodies; DX bodies or a crop mode is required.
Nikon F mount, DX format. 52mm filter thread, non-rotating. Compatible with all Nikon DX and FX DSLRs, and with Nikon Z mirrorless cameras via the FTZ adapter with full AF and VR function. The AF-P DX 18-55mm VR (2016) succeeded it with a stepping motor for smoother continuous AF tracking in video; the AF-P version is preferred for video work. No weather sealing. The retractable mechanism makes the VR II more compact than the VR I when stored, a practical advantage for bag-based carry.
The VR II is available at low used prices as a retired kit lens. For photographers using Nikon DX bodies from the D3300 through D5600 generation, it covers the standard focal range competently. The AF-P version is worth preferring if video is a primary use. Before purchase, verify the retractable barrel extends and locks cleanly in both positions, confirm VR engages and operates without unusual movement, and test Silent Wave Motor AF response throughout the focal range.
