Nikon's retractable second-gen DX kit zoom, more compact and slightly sharper than the VR I.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II was introduced in 2014 as an update to the original VR version. Its most visible change is a retractable design that makes the lens significantly more compact when stored. It was bundled with bodies like the D3300, D3400, and D5300.
Optically it is marginally sharper than the VR I, particularly in the corners. VR provides roughly 4 stops of stabilisation. The AF-S motor is quiet and responsive. Build is all-plastic including the mount, a cost-cutting measure versus the VR I's metal mount. The retractable mechanism requires a twist to extend before shooting.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 52mm filter thread. This was superseded by the AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR which uses a stepping motor for smoother quieter autofocus. The AF-P version is preferred for video work.
Common and cheap used. The plastic mount is the weak point so check it for play or cracks. Test the retractable mechanism and verify it locks firmly in both positions. The AF-P version is a better buy if your body supports it. Avoid if the mount feels loose.
