Nikon's updated 300mm f/2.8 Mark II — improved VR and Nano Crystal coating over the original.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR II launched in 2010 as an update to the original 300mm f/2.8 VR, improving VR stabilisation to 4 stops and adding Nano Crystal coating for enhanced flare control. It remains one of Nikon's finest telephoto primes.
Optically outstanding — tack-sharp from f/2.8 with the VR II providing 4 stops vs the original's 3. Nano Crystal coating virtually eliminates ghosting. AF-S motor is instantaneous. The f/2.8 at 300mm provides extraordinary subject isolation and low-light capability.
Nikon F mount with 52mm drop-in filter holder. Approximately 2900g — very heavy. Full weather sealing. Gold-ring professional. 1.4x and 2x TC compatible — 420mm f/4 and 600mm f/5.6. Minimum focus distance 230cm.
Available used at professional prices. The VR II and Nano Crystal coating are meaningful improvements over the Mark I. The Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S is the mirrorless successor. Check VR mechanism operation. For professional sports and wildlife photographers on F-mount.
