Nikon's first APS-C Z-mount mirrorless with a compact DSLR-style body.
The Nikon Z 50 was released in November 2019 as Nikon's first DX-format Z-mount mirrorless camera, bringing the Z mirrorless platform to APS-C photography in a compact body. The 20.9MP BSI CMOS sensor provides the Z-mount's phase-detection AF across 209 points on the DX-format sensor area. There is no in-body image stabilisation — stabilisation relies on lens-based solutions. The flip-down selfie screen tilts forward for content creation and self-facing framing.
The 20.9MP DX BSI CMOS sensor pairs with the EXPEED 6 processor. The 209-point hybrid AF system covers 87% of the sensor width and height with phase-detection for fast tracking. Burst shooting runs at 11fps. 4K video records at up to 30fps from the DX sensor with a slight read-out crop. No in-body image stabilisation. Battery life approximately 280 shots using the EN-EL25, body weight approximately 395g with battery and card, single SD UHS-I slot.
The Z 50's compact size and 20.9MP DX sensor provide the Z-mount's native lens ecosystem — including adapted F-mount lenses via the FTZ adapter — in a body lighter and smaller than any F-mount DSLR. The APS-C sensor provides a 1.5x crop factor that effectively extends focal length, useful with telephoto Z-mount lenses. The EN-EL25 battery's 280-shot CIPA rating is low; a spare battery is advisable for extended sessions.
On the used market the Z 50 is available at affordable Z-mount APS-C prices. Condition checks: PDAF performance in live view, EN-EL25 battery health, SD slot contacts, and flip-down screen hinge. The Nikon Zfc provides the same sensor with a retro-styled body. The Nikon Z 30 (2022) adds a mic/headphone jack in a slightly smaller body without an EVF. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount lenses; F-mount lenses autofocus via the FTZ adapter.
