Olympus's original professional MFT flagship with phase-detect AF and weather sealing.
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 launched in 2013 as the first Micro Four Thirds camera with on-sensor phase-detect AF, enabling fast autofocus with both MFT and adapted Four Thirds lenses. With a 16.3MP sensor, 5-axis IBIS, and comprehensive weather sealing, it was Olympus's first truly professional mirrorless body.
Key features include the hybrid contrast and phase-detect AF system with 81 points, 10fps burst, 5-axis IBIS with approximately 4 stops, a 2.36M-dot EVF, and dust, splash, and freeze proofing. The body is magnesium alloy with a professional grip and dual control dials.
The E-M1 was praised for bringing professional-level performance to MFT with reliable AF for Four Thirds lenses, excellent build quality, and the best IBIS of its era. It is criticised for the 16MP sensor which limits resolution and for video features that lag behind Panasonic GH-series bodies.
Affordable used. Check IBIS operation, the phase-detect AF with a Four Thirds lens if available, and shutter count. The E-M1 Mark II and Mark III offer dramatic improvements. The original E-M1 remains a capable body for photographers who value weather sealing and build quality.
