Olympus's original professional MFT flagship with phase-detect AF and weather sealing.
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 was introduced in September 2013 as Olympus's professional-tier MFT body, succeeding the E-5 DSLR as the primary body for Four Thirds and MFT users. Its 37-point hybrid phase-detect and contrast-detect AF system enabled reliable tracking of moving subjects — a meaningful improvement over the contrast-only approach of earlier MFT bodies. IP53 weather sealing, a 2.36M-dot EVF, and 5-axis IBIS positioned it as the reference professional MFT body through 2016 when the E-M1 Mark II replaced it.
The 16.1MP MFT CMOS sensor pairs with the TruePic VII processor. The 37-point phase-detect AF covers the frame with reliable tracking for wildlife, sports, and documentary subjects at up to 10fps in sequential shooting. The 5-axis sensor-shift IBIS is rated at up to 4 stops, enabling handheld shooting in conditions that would require a tripod on unstabilised bodies. IP53 weather and dust resistance with freeze-proof operation requires a compatible Olympus sealed lens for full system protection. Battery life approximately 350 shots using the BLN-1, body weight approximately 497g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The E-M1's practical significance was bringing reliable phase-detect AF to MFT — enabling sports and wildlife use that the contrast-detect E-M5 could not cover reliably. The 5-axis IBIS is effective for handheld low-light stills and video stabilisation; the 4-stop rating provides real-world benefit for architecture and close subjects where movement blur is otherwise a problem. The IP53 rating makes it a capable outdoor body in rain and dusty conditions when paired with weather-sealed lenses. Full Four Thirds legacy lens compatibility via the MMF-3 adapter was a specific selling point for existing Olympus SLR users.
On the used market the E-M1 is affordable as a proven professional MFT platform. Condition checks: IBIS operation, phase-detect AF tracking response at the maximum burst rate, weather sealing at the mount and seams, and EVF for any burn-in. The BLN-1 battery is shared with the E-M5 and E-M5 Mark II — spares are available. The E-M1 Mark II (2016) provides significantly faster burst (18fps), deeper buffer, and improved AF at a higher price. Compatible with all MFT lenses; Four Thirds lenses require the MMF-3 adapter for full AF function.
