OM System's computational photography flagship, the fastest-shooting MFT camera ever made.
The OM System OM-1 was announced in February 2022 as the flagship MFT body, the first product released under the OM System brand following the separation of Olympus's camera business. The 20.4MP back-side illuminated MFT CMOS sensor is paired with a Quad Bayer array for AI-based subject detection AF, providing the first phase-detect AF architecture in an OM System flagship body. At 10fps mechanical and 50fps electronic shutter burst rates, and with 7-stop IBIS, it represents the most capable MFT body produced to that point.
The 20.4MP BSI MFT CMOS sensor pairs with the TruePic X processor, which powers the AI-based subject detection covering humans, animals, birds, motorsports, trains, aircraft, and more. Mechanical shutter burst runs at 10fps; electronic shutter extends to 50fps with no blackout. The 5-axis IBIS is rated at 7 stops body-only — the highest published figure in the MFT category. 4K video records at up to 60fps. At approximately 599g with battery and card the body is substantial for MFT but appropriate for professional use. Dual SD card slots provide backup and overflow. Build is rated to IPX1 water resistance and freeze-proof to -10°C.
The OM-1's practical advantages are concentrated in three areas: the 50fps electronic burst with AI subject tracking makes it capable for birds-in-flight and wildlife subjects that test smaller MFT bodies; 7-stop IBIS enables handheld shooting in conditions that larger full-frame systems require a tripod for; and the professional sealing extends the working conditions beyond most mirrorless bodies. The MFT 2x crop factor means the 150-600mm equivalent from a 75-300mm lens covers birding subjects that would require much larger full-frame optics.
On the used market the OM-1 is the reference-grade MFT body with correspondingly premium pricing. Condition checks: IBIS operation, both SD card slot contacts, AI AF subject detection across its declared categories, and weather sealing. The OM System OM-1 Mark II (2024) added minor refinements; the original remains fully capable. Compatible with all MFT lenses from OM System, Olympus, Panasonic, and Leica DG.
