OM System's compact weather-sealed MFT body with IBIS and computational photography features.
The OM System OM-5 was released in 2022 as the mid-tier weather-resistant MFT mirrorless body from OM System, the brand formed from Olympus Imaging. Building on the Olympus OM-D E-M5 III, the OM-5 carries IP53 dust and splash resistance with freeze protection to -10°C, making it the most compact weather-sealed OM System body available. The 121-point on-chip phase-detection AF system provides tracking across the full sensor area. Computational photography features including handheld High Resolution and Live ND are built in.
The 20MP MFT Live MOS sensor pairs with the TruePic VIII processor. The 121-point all-cross-type PDAF system provides continuous subject tracking. Burst shooting runs at 10fps with C-AF and 30fps with electronic shutter at fixed focus. 4K video records at up to 30fps. 5-axis IBIS is built in. IP53 dust and splash resistance with freeze protection to -10°C. Battery life approximately 310 shots using the BLS-50, body weight approximately 366g with battery and card, single SD UHS-II slot.
The IP53 weather sealing at 366g is the OM-5's practical position: it provides weather-resistant MFT mirrorless capability in the most compact sealed body in the OM System lineup. For travel, hiking, and outdoor photography in variable weather conditions where the lightweight MFT system is the size priority, the OM-5 provides protection without the larger E-M1 series body. Handheld High Resolution mode combines multiple frames for up to 80MP output from the 20MP sensor.
On the used market the OM-5 is available at mid-range compact mirrorless prices. Condition checks: IP53 sealing at port covers and body joints, IBIS operation, BLS-50 battery health, and SD slot contacts. The BLS-50 is shared with the E-M10 series and E-PL bodies — widely available. The OM System OM-5 Mark II (2024) adds the TruePic IX processor with improved AI subject recognition at a modest premium. Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds lenses from Olympus, OM System, and Panasonic.
