Panasonic's low-light video specialist MFT body with dual native ISO and 4K 60fps.
The Panasonic Lumix GH5S was released in January 2018 as a video-specialised variant of the GH5, trading the GH5's 20.3MP sensor for a 10.28MP design with Dual Native ISO — maintaining two native ISO points (ISO 400 and ISO 2500) where sensor read noise is minimised for cleaner high-sensitivity footage. The GH5S does not include in-body image stabilisation, unlike the GH5 — this was a deliberate design decision for cinema and gimbal-mounted use where IBIS and sensor-shift mechanisms can interfere with stabilisation rigs.
The 10.28MP MFT Live MOS sensor pairs with the Venus Engine processor. Dual Native ISO provides native sensitivity at ISO 400 and ISO 2500, with the sensor achieving usable footage up to ISO 204800. 4K DCI and UHD records at up to 60fps; 4K DCI at 30fps records in 10-bit 4:2:2 internally. No in-body image stabilisation is provided — stabilisation relies entirely on compatible lens OIS or external gimbal. Dust and splash resistance with freeze protection is built in. Body weight approximately 660g with battery and card, dual SD/SDHC/SDXC slots.
The GH5S's practical purpose is extreme low-light video: the 10MP sensor prioritises larger photosites and reduced read noise over resolution, with Dual Native ISO providing cleaner footage at high sensitivity than the GH5's single native ISO approach. The absence of IBIS is a deliberate trade-off for cinema use — film productions and gimbal-mounted video work do not benefit from in-body stabilisation and the sensor-shift mechanism creates complexity in rig balancing. For handheld documentary and stabilised use, the GH5 with IBIS is the appropriate choice.
On the used market the GH5S is a specialist cinema body at video-oriented pricing. Condition checks: Dual Native ISO performance (test at ISO 2500 and above for expected noise floor), both SD slot contacts, and weather sealing at the body. The GH6 (2022) provides a higher-resolution 25MP sensor with improved video specs for cinema use. Confirm before purchasing whether IBIS is needed — the GH5S has none, unlike the GH5 and GH5 II. Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds lenses from Panasonic, Olympus, and OM System.
