Panasonic's low-light video specialist MFT body with dual native ISO and 4K 60fps.
The Panasonic Lumix GH5S launched in 2018 as a specialist low-light video variant of the GH5. By reducing the sensor to 10.2MP with larger pixels, it achieved Dual Native ISO at 400 and 2500 for dramatically cleaner high-ISO video. It targeted professional filmmakers who needed maximum low-light capability from MFT.
Key features include the 10.2MP multi-aspect sensor, Dual Native ISO for clean footage at ISO 2500 and above, 4K 60fps 10-bit recording, V-Log/V-Gamut colour profiles, timecode in/out via BNC connector, and Cinema 4K recording. The body is weather sealed but deliberately omits IBIS to eliminate any potential micro-vibration in the image.
The GH5S is praised for low-light video quality that approaches full-frame cameras in a much smaller body. It is criticised for the 10.2MP sensor that makes it impractical for stills, the deliberate omission of IBIS, and the DFD AF that limits use for run-and-gun shooting.
Specialist used market. Check the sensor for hot pixels at high ISO, verify Dual Native ISO switching, and test timecode synchronisation if BNC is important. The GH5S is a tool for controlled filmmaking environments, not a general-purpose camera.
