Panasonic's landmark video-focused MFT flagship that redefined mirrorless filmmaking.
The Panasonic Lumix GH5 was released in February 2017 as Panasonic's professional hybrid mirrorless body, achieving 4K/60fps at 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording — the first consumer mirrorless camera to record 10-bit video internally to a standard SD card. The 20.3MP MFT Live MOS sensor pairs with 5-axis IBIS and Dual IS 2 for combined stabilisation. IP53 dust and splash resistance with freeze protection is built throughout. The AF system uses DFD (Depth From Defocus) contrast-detection — no on-sensor phase-detection is provided.
The 20.3MP MFT Live MOS sensor pairs with the Venus Engine 10 processor. Autofocus uses DFD contrast-detect with subject tracking — no on-sensor PDAF. Burst shooting runs at 12fps with AFS and 9fps with AFC tracking. 4K video records at up to 60fps in 10-bit 4:2:2 internally; C4K/24fps is also supported. 5-axis IBIS cooperates with compatible lens OIS through Dual IS 2. IP53 dust and splash resistance with freeze protection. Battery life approximately 410 shots using the DMW-BLF19, body weight approximately 725g with battery and card, dual SD UHS-II slots.
The 4K/60fps 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording was the GH5's landmark specification at launch — enabling professional-grade colour grading workflows from internal SD recordings without an external recorder. The 10-bit colour depth provides substantially more headroom for grading than 8-bit alternatives. DFD AF provides reliable continuous tracking for video despite the absence of PDAF. For video production, the GH5 remains a capable workhorse across a broad range of genres.
On the used market the GH5 is widely available at very affordable prices given its 2017 launch. Condition checks: IBIS operation and Dual IS 2 cooperation with compatible lenses, both SD slot contacts, IP53 sealing at port covers, and DMW-BLF19 battery health — specific to GH5 and GH5 II. The GH6 (2022) provides an updated 25MP sensor with improved video specs. Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds lenses from Panasonic, Olympus, and OM System.
