Sony's latest GM ultra-wide zoom — dramatically lighter than the original with improved optics and AF.

The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II (SEL1635GM2) was released in 2022 as the second-generation full-frame wide zoom for Sony FE-mount, reducing the original GM's 680g to 547g (133g lighter) with a new 15-element/12-group optical formula. Eleven rounded aperture blades. 82mm filter thread. 0.22m MFD (0.32x magnification). Four XD linear motors drive two independent focus groups.

The weight reduction from 680g to 547g (19% lighter) reflects the simplified optical formula: the Mk II achieves comparable optical performance with fewer elements, reducing the glass mass. The 0.22m MFD (0.32x magnification) versus the original's 0.28m enables closer wide-angle framing. The 4-motor XD drive provides improved tracking performance for fast-moving subjects at wide angles.
