Sony's original full-frame kit zoom, adequate but outclassed by later alternatives.
The Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS was launched in 2014 as the kit lens for the original Sony A7 — one of the first affordable full-frame mirrorless cameras. As Sony's first standard zoom in the FE system, it played an important role in the A7 system's early growth; it was frequently bundled with the A7 and A7II at launch and served as the default entry point for full-frame E-mount shooting. The lens covers 28-70mm, slightly narrower than the 24-70mm range offered by most full-frame standard zooms. Built-in optical image stabilisation (OSS) was a practical asset on first-generation A7 bodies, which lacked in-body stabilisation.
The optical design uses 9 elements in 8 groups. The 55mm filter thread is shared with several Sony FE primes, a common mid-range size that keeps filter costs accessible. At 295g the lens carries comfortably for all-day travel and documentary use. A minimum focus distance of 0.30m enables close subject work that most full-frame standard zooms cannot match. Optical SteadyShot (OSS) provides built-in image stabilisation, cooperating with in-body IS on IBIS-equipped A7-series bodies. The variable aperture runs from f/3.5 at 28mm to f/5.6 at 70mm. Build is lightweight plastic throughout with a retractable barrel that collapses for storage. The front element does not rotate during focus, which is useful when a polarising filter is in use. Autofocus performance varies with the host body; first-generation A7-series bodies without phase-detect sensors focus more slowly than later PDAF-equipped variants.
For general travel and everyday photography in good light the 28-70mm OSS performs adequately within its class. Centre sharpness is acceptable at typical shooting apertures; corner performance is soft at 28mm wide open and improves when stopped down to f/8. Autofocus is responsive on modern A7-series bodies. OSS provides useful handheld stability for stills. The 28mm wide end is a practical limitation for architecture and environmental shots where 24mm is the expected minimum. Stopped down to f/8, the lens delivers usable landscape and travel record shots. Video use is possible but the lens is not optimised for it.
On the used market the 28-70mm OSS commands low prices, consistent with its entry-level specification. It is adequate for beginners entering the FE system on a tight budget but is quickly outgrown. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III is a well-supported upgrade offering a significantly faster aperture at a modest price increase; the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS extends the range at the wide end. Condition checks: OSS operation, zoom ring smoothness, retractable barrel mechanism, and AF motor. A functional starting point for the FE system, with clear upgrade paths available.
