Sony's original full-frame kit zoom, adequate but outclassed by later alternatives.
The Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS was launched in 2014 as the kit lens for the original Sony A7. It covers a slightly narrower range than the traditional 24-70mm starting at 28mm. As Sony's first and most affordable full-frame FE zoom it introduced millions of users to the E-mount system.
Optical quality is average with acceptable centre sharpness but soft corners especially at 28mm wide open. OSS provides around 4 stops of stabilisation. Autofocus is adequate but not fast by modern standards. The 28mm wide end is limiting compared to the 24mm offered by competitors. Build is lightweight plastic throughout.
Sony FE mount with full-frame coverage, 55mm filter thread. Superseded in the kit-lens role by the FE 28-60mm which is more compact and outperformed by the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III is a popular upgrade with a faster aperture at a reasonable price.
Very cheap used. Check OSS operation and AF motor. At this price it is serviceable for beginners. However the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is such a significant upgrade that the Sony 28-70mm is difficult to recommend unless budget is the absolute constraint.
