Sony's updated kit zoom — the FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II with improved optics.
The Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II is the updated version of Sony's full-frame kit zoom for E-mount cameras. The Mark II improves optical quality and AF over the original — which was one of the most common kit lenses bundled with a7-series cameras. OSS optical stabilisation provides effective handheld shooting support.
Optical performance is improved over the original — better corner sharpness and overall consistency. Centre sharpness is good from wide open. OSS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. The variable aperture limits low-light capability but is adequate for a kit zoom. The improved linear motor AF is faster and quieter than the original.
Sony FE mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 55mm — compact. Weight is approximately 295 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic but functional consumer-grade. OSS stabilisation adds practical value. The 28mm starting point provides useful wide-angle coverage. No weather sealing. A fundamental full-frame kit zoom.
Available from kit splits. Check OSS and AF operation. An adequate starter zoom for Sony full-frame bodies. The improved Mark II is preferred over the original. The Sony FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA or Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 are significant upgrades. Best treated as a stepping stone rather than a destination lens.
