Sony's compact stabilised telephoto zoom with G-series optics, a lighter alternative to the GM.
The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS is Sony's mid-range telephoto zoom for the full-frame E-mount, launched in 2014. Wearing the G designation, it provides professional-quality optics at a lower weight and price than the f/2.8 GM. It has been a popular choice for travel and event photographers.
Optical quality is very good with sharp results across the zoom range and well-controlled chromatic aberration. OSS provides approximately 5 stops of stabilisation. Autofocus is adequate but not as fast as later Sony lenses. Build is weather-sealed with a solid feel and a tripod collar foot.
Sony FE mount only, 72mm filter thread. The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD offers a wider aperture at a similar size. The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 Macro G OSS II succeeded it with macro capability and improved optics. The GM f/2.8 is the professional alternative.
Good value used as it has been superseded. Check OSS operation, AF speed at all focal lengths, and the internal hood for rattling. The lens remains optically capable and the f/4 weight advantage over f/2.8 is significant for travel.
