Sony's compact stabilised telephoto zoom with G-series optics, a lighter alternative to the GM.
The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS (SEL70200G) was released in 2013 as one of the first native FE telephoto zooms for the full-frame E-mount system, providing constant f/4 aperture at lighter weight than f/2.8 alternatives. The G designation marks Sony's second optical tier; the lens predates the G Master range introduced in 2016 and served as the reference FE professional telephoto zoom for several years. Optical SteadyShot stabilisation is built in. It occupies the natural role of a lighter telephoto zoom alternative to the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS for photographers to whom the GM's 1,480g is impractical.
The optical design uses 21 elements in 15 groups. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 72mm filter thread is specific to this lens — distinct from the 77mm of the FE 70-200mm GM OSS — requiring a separate filter set if pairing both in a kit. At 840g the lens is substantially lighter than the GM OSS (1,480g) and the GM II (1,045g), making it the lightest native FE 70-200mm option. Minimum focus distance varies across the zoom range: approximately 1.0m at 70mm to 1.5m at 200mm. OSS is built in for handheld image stabilisation throughout the zoom range.
The SEL70200G's practical role is the lightweight FE telephoto zoom for photographers for whom the GM's weight is a limiting factor for extended handheld or travel use. At 840g the weight difference versus the GM is meaningful for event and wildlife sessions. Constant f/4 is a practical constraint versus the GM's f/2.8 — two stops slower in any given lighting condition. For landscape, travel, and events in good light where f/4 is workable, the 640g weight saving over the GM may outweigh the aperture trade-off. Optical quality at f/4 is consistently strong throughout the zoom range.
On the used market the SEL70200G is widely available at substantially lower prices than the GM OSS or GM II. Condition checks: OSS operation (listen for activation, observe stabilised viewfinder output), AF motor response across the zoom range, and front element for any coating marks. The 72mm filter thread requires a dedicated filter set separate from 77mm GM lenses. The GM II at 1,045g is approaching the SEL70200G's weight while offering f/2.8 — the price differential determines whether the aperture and optical tier improvement justifies the premium. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame and APS-C E-mount bodies.
