Sony's updated 70-200mm f/4 — lighter and sharper than original with faster AF and close focus.
The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II launched in 2024 as a comprehensive update to the original G-series telephoto zoom. It significantly reduces weight while improving optics and AF speed — following the same formula as Sony's other recent 'Mark II' GM and G updates.
Optically very good — sharper than the original across the range with improved corner performance. XD Linear Motor AF for fast, precise tracking. OSS stabilisation. Improved close focus capability. Constant f/4 aperture for consistent exposure.
Sony FE mount with 72mm filter thread. Dramatically lighter than the original G version. Weather-sealed dust and moisture resistant. Internal zoom design. Aperture ring with de-click switch. Fluorine coating.
Very new — limited used availability. The original 70-200mm f/4 G OSS is available much cheaper used. The weight reduction and improved AF are the main upgrades. For Sony shooters wanting a modern f/4 telephoto without the bulk and cost of the f/2.8 GM II.
