Sony's updated 70-200mm f/4 — lighter and sharper than original with faster AF and close focus.
The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II (SEL70200G2) was released in 2022 as the second-generation constant f/4 telephoto zoom for Sony FE full-frame. Nineteen elements in 13 groups including advanced aspherical, aspherical, Super ED, and ED elements. Nine rounded aperture blades. 72mm filter thread. At 794g without tripod collar; 862g with collar. 0.26m MFD at 70mm; 0.42m at 200mm (1:2 macro).
Nineteen elements in 13 groups (1 advanced aspherical + 1 aspherical + 1 Super ED + 3 ED elements). Nine rounded aperture blades. The 72mm filter thread (not 67mm — some sources incorrectly list 67mm; 72mm confirmed). At 794g without tripod collar; 862g with collar. Minimum focus distance of 0.26m at 70mm; 0.42m at 200mm (1:2 half-life-size macro). 4× XD linear AF motors. OSS. f/4 constant aperture. Full-frame coverage. Sony FE mount.
The Mark II's defining upgrades over the original SEL70200G are 1:2 macro capability at 200mm, internal zoom (barrel length unchanged at all focal lengths), and 4 XD (extreme dynamic) linear AF motors for faster, more reliable AF tracking. The 1:2 magnification at 0.42m at 200mm makes the SEL70200G2 the only Sony G telephoto zoom with half-life-size macro capability. Weight decreased from 840g to 794g (without collar) versus the original.
On the used market the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II is available at Sony FE G-line telephoto pricing. Condition checks: XD AF motor response, OSS engagement, 72mm front element for marks, zoom ring smoothness (internal zoom). Note: filter thread is 72mm (not 67mm). Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame and APS-C E-mount bodies.
