Tokina's popular ultra-wide for Nikon DX — the AT-X 12-24mm f/4 Pro with constant aperture.
The Tokina AT-X 124 PRO DX 12-24mm f/4 was released in 2004 as one of the first quality ultra-wide zooms for APS-C DSLRs. The constant f/4 aperture and PRO build quality set it above variable-aperture competitors. On Nikon DX, it covers an 18-36mm equivalent range. The Tokina focus clutch provides instant AF/MF switching.
Optical performance is good. Sharpness is very good in the centre and respectable in the corners when stopped down. The constant f/4 aperture provides consistent exposure throughout the range. Tokina's metal build quality and focus clutch mechanism are distinguishing features. Good distortion control for an ultra-wide zoom of this era.
Nikon F mount, APS-C (DX). Filter thread is 77mm. Weight is approximately 570 grams — moderate. Build quality is excellent with Tokina's solid metal construction and one-touch focus clutch mechanism. No image stabilisation. The PRO DX designation indicates professional APS-C coverage with premium construction.
Available at low used prices. Check the focus clutch and AF accuracy. One of the earliest quality DX ultra-wide zooms. Superseded by the 11-16mm f/2.8 and 11-20mm f/2.8 for speed, and the Nikon 12-24mm f/4 for native quality. Still functional for budget DX wide-angle work.
