Canon's first IS kit zoom — the EF 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS that added stabilisation.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is Canon's standard APS-C kit zoom for EF-S-mount DSLR cameras, bundled with Canon's Rebel and mid-range APS-C bodies. The IS (Image Stabilizer) provides stabilisation useful at the slower shutter speeds common with the f/5.6 maximum aperture at 55mm.
The lens covers 18–55mm (29–88mm equivalent on APS-C) with variable f/3.5-5.6 aperture, EF-S APS-C-only image circle, Canon's IS stabilisation, ring-type or micro-USM autofocus depending on version, and Canon EF-S mount.
The 18-55mm IS is Canon's most widely shipped lens and represents the standard starting point for Canon APS-C DSLR photography. Multiple versions exist (IS I, IS II, IS STM) with progressively improved stabilisation and focus motors. The STM version in particular offers noticeably smoother AF for video use.
Verify the specific IS version from lens markings (IS, IS II, or IS STM). Test IS operation and autofocus speed. Inspect elements for dust or cleaning marks. Check for micro-USM failures common in non-STM consumer kit lenses.
