Canon's enthusiast APS-C DSLR from 2007 with 10.1MP sensor, robust build, and reliable 9-point AF.
The Canon EOS 40D launched in 2007 as Canon's mid-range enthusiast APS-C DSLR, slotting between the consumer Rebel line and the professional 1D series. It was well-regarded for its build quality and responsive handling at a reasonable price.
The 10.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor delivers clean images up to ISO 1600 with usable results at ISO 3200. 9-point AF system with all cross-type sensors. 6.5fps burst rate was excellent for its class. Live View introduced for the first time in this Canon series.
Magnesium alloy body with weather sealing. 3-inch fixed LCD screen. Compact Flash card slot. Viewfinder with 95% coverage. Built-in flash. 740g body only. Battery grip BG-E2N available for extended shooting and portrait grip.
Very cheap used. Shutter rated for 100,000 actuations — check count. Limited to 10.1MP which feels low now. No video recording. The 50D added resolution and the 7D added a much better AF system. A solid beginner DSLR if EF lenses are already owned.
