Canon's US-market entry DSLR — same as EOS 1000D with 10.1MP sensor and basic features.
The Canon EOS Rebel XS is the North American market name for the Canon EOS 1000D — Canon's most basic DSLR of 2008. It used the 10.1MP sensor from the older 400D in a simplified body aimed at first-time DSLR buyers.
The 10.1MP APS-C sensor produces clean results to ISO 400. 7-point AF with single cross-type centre. 3fps burst. Live View added. DIGIC III processor. Functionally identical to the EOS 1000D — different naming for the US market.
Lightweight body at 450g. 2.5-inch fixed LCD. SD card. Built-in flash. EF and EF-S mount. No spot metering. Simplified controls for beginners. Same camera as 1000D sold in other markets.
Essentially free used. Same as EOS 1000D — see that entry for full details. Only useful as a very cheap introduction to Canon DSLR photography. Check shutter count. The 1100D/Rebel T3 is a worthwhile step up.
