Laowa's extreme ultra-wide rectilinear prime — 9mm on full frame with zero distortion.
The Laowa 9mm f/5.6 W-Dreamer is an extraordinary achievement in optical design — a 9mm rectilinear prime that covers full frame with virtually zero distortion. Produced by Venus Optics, it is the widest non-fisheye lens available for full-frame cameras, offering a staggering 135-degree field of view while keeping straight lines straight, unlike fisheye alternatives.
Optical performance prioritises distortion correction above all else. The near-zero distortion at 9mm on full frame is genuinely remarkable — no other lens achieves this. Sharpness is good in the centre when stopped down but softens towards the extreme corners as the image circle is pushed to its limits. Vignetting is present and significant wide open. The f/5.6 maximum aperture is very slow.
Sony FE mount in this listing — also available in Nikon Z, Canon RF, and Leica M mounts. Filter thread uses a rear magnetic filter holder. Weight is approximately 350 grams — compact for the achievement. Build quality is good with metal construction. Fully manual — no autofocus, no electronics, no EXIF data. Focus is set and left at hyperfocal for most uses.
Available on the used market at moderate prices. Check for clean front element and smooth focus ring. The f/5.6 aperture limits use to well-lit situations. A specialist tool for extreme wide-angle photography — architecture, interiors, real estate, and dramatic landscape work. Nothing else offers this perspective on full frame without fisheye distortion.
