Nikon's modern full-frame telephoto zoom — the AF-P 70-300mm with stepping motor for smooth video AF.
The Nikon AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR was released in 2016 as an update to the popular AF-S 70-300mm VR. The AF-P designation indicates a stepping motor for significantly smoother, quieter autofocus — a major improvement for video shooting. It covers the essential telephoto zoom range with VR stabilisation for casual wildlife, sports, and portrait work.
Optical performance is very good — a noticeable improvement over the AF-S predecessor. Sharpness is impressive throughout the range with good performance even at 300mm. The ED element controls chromatic aberration effectively. VR stabilisation provides approximately 4.5 stops of correction. The stepping motor AF is nearly silent and buttery smooth for video.
Nikon F mount, full-frame coverage. Filter thread is 67mm. Weight is approximately 680 grams — slightly lighter than the AF-S version. Build quality is good with the electromagnetic diaphragm (E-type) for consistent exposure during continuous shooting. Note: AF-P lenses require Nikon bodies from approximately 2013 onwards for full compatibility.
Good availability on the used market at reasonable prices. Check VR and AF-P motor operation. The AF-P motor is a genuine improvement over the AF-S version — essential for video work. Verify body compatibility before purchase. An excellent mid-range telephoto for Nikon DSLR shooters who value smooth AF and video capability.
