Nikon's budget APS-C telephoto with AF-S motor — 82.5-300mm equivalent without VR stabilisation.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G is a budget telephoto zoom for Nikon DX-format DSLRs, covering 82.5-300mm equivalent. The AF-S motor ensures autofocus on all Nikon DSLR bodies including entry-level models without built-in AF motors.
Optical quality is basic — acceptable in the centre at mid-focal lengths but soft at the edges and at 200mm. No VR stabilisation makes handheld use at longer focal lengths difficult. The AF-S motor provides quiet, fast autofocus. ED glass helps with chromatic aberration.
Nikon F mount, DX format only. 52mm filter thread. Weighs approximately 255g — very lightweight. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 110cm. Plastic construction including mount. The HB-34 hood is included.
Very cheap used. The AF-S DX 55-200mm f/4-5.6G VR version adds stabilisation and is much more practical — worth the small premium. The AF-P DX 70-300mm VR is the modern successor. Only consider if obtained free with a camera or if absolute lowest cost is essential.
