Nikon's affordable full-frame telephoto zoom with VR, a staple for DX and FX shooters.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR is Nikon's mid-range telephoto zoom, launched in 2006. Unlike the DX 55-200mm, this is a full-frame lens that covers both FX and DX bodies, making it versatile across Nikon's DSLR range. It offers useful telephoto reach with VR stabilisation at a moderate price.
Optical quality is good with sharp results from 70-200mm, softening gradually toward 300mm. ED glass controls chromatic aberration effectively. VR provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. The IF design keeps the lens length constant during focusing. AF-S motor is reasonably fast and quiet. Build is plastic but well-constructed.
Nikon F mount compatible with both FX and DX bodies, 67mm filter thread. The AF-P version (70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR) succeeded it with a stepping motor and improved optics but is not backward-compatible with all older bodies. There are no other mount options.
Good value used. Check VR operation, AF motor response, and the IF focusing mechanism. Avoid copies where the AF hunts excessively as this can indicate motor wear. The AF-P version is optically better and worth the premium if your body supports it.
