Nikon's affordable full-frame telephoto zoom with VR, a staple for DX and FX shooters.
The Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is Nikon's mid-range telephoto zoom for the full-frame and DX systems, launched in 2006. It replaced the earlier 70-300mm D version as the entry to Nikon's telephoto range by adding VR stabilisation, a Silent Wave Motor, and ED glass in a full-frame-compatible package. Unlike the DX 55-200mm, it covers both FX and DX sensor formats, making it versatile across the full Nikon DSLR range. The combination of 300mm reach, VR, and moderate price established it as one of the most widely sold telephoto lenses in the Nikon F system.
The optical design uses 17 elements in 12 groups, including two ED elements. The 67mm filter thread is less common across the Nikon system than the 52mm and 77mm sizes — most photographers will need a step-up ring for existing filter collections. At 745g the lens is substantial for a consumer telephoto, reflecting the full-frame image circle; the DX 55-200mm VR covers APS-C shooters at roughly half the weight. Minimum focus distance of 1.5m suits the telephoto use case — wildlife and sports subjects are typically well beyond this point. VR provides approximately 4 stops of shake compensation, effective for static handheld telephoto work. The IF (Internal Focus) design keeps the barrel length constant and prevents front-element rotation — useful when a polarising filter is in use. The AF-S Silent Wave Motor enables autofocus independent of the camera body's AF motor, making the lens compatible with D40 and D60 bodies. The G designation indicates no aperture ring; build is plastic throughout with no weather sealing.
For outdoor telephoto work the 70-300mm covers wildlife, birds, and travel photography at an accessible price. The 105-450mm equivalent range on DX bodies extends reach significantly. VR is effective for static subjects; at 300mm handheld shooting in adequate light is practical with VR engaged. Sharpness is good from 70mm to around 200mm; the lens softens progressively toward 300mm, particularly at maximum aperture — typical for telephoto zooms at this price. Autofocus is reliable for most non-professional applications, though the 2018 AF-P E version offers a meaningfully faster and quieter stepping motor for demanding use.
On the used market the original 70-300mm VR is plentiful and affordable. Condition checks should cover VR operation, zoom ring smoothness, and AF motor response. Dust inside the lens is common but typically cosmetic and does not affect image quality. The AF-P E 70-300mm (2018) provides a stepping motor, updated optics, and weather sealing at a premium. Compatible with Z-mount bodies via the FTZ adapter, maintaining AF and VR. On DX bodies the 55-200mm is lighter and more compact; the 70-300mm G is the better choice for FX use. A proven and cost-effective telephoto for the Nikon F ecosystem.
