Olympus's budget telephoto zoom for the original Four Thirds system — basic but functional.
The Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm f/4-5.6 is a budget telephoto zoom for the original Four Thirds system, providing an 80-300mm equivalent range. Released as a kit companion lens, it offered affordable telephoto reach for entry-level Four Thirds cameras like the E-300, E-500, and E-410. Multiple versions exist with incremental improvements.
Optical performance is basic but functional for casual telephoto work. Centre sharpness is acceptable when stopped down. The variable aperture limits low-light use significantly. Adequate for daylight wildlife and sports at a distance, but not suitable for demanding photography. The ED designation on later versions indicates improved chromatic aberration correction.
Four Thirds mount — requires an MMF adapter for use on Micro Four Thirds bodies, adding bulk and potentially slowing AF. Filter thread is 58mm. Weight is approximately 220 grams — very light. Build quality is basic plastic. No weather sealing. No image stabilisation — rely on body-based IS on later Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds cameras.
Very cheap on the used market — often under £20. Check for smooth zoom and AF operation. The native MFT 40-150mm f/4-5.6 R is a better choice for MFT shooters as it avoids the adapter. Only worth considering if bundled with a Four Thirds camera purchase. The MFT 40-150mm f/4 PRO is the premium upgrade.
