Pentax's APS-C telephoto zoom with weather resistance — 82.5-450mm equiv with HD coating.
The Pentax HD DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR launched in 2013 as a weather-resistant telephoto zoom for Pentax APS-C DSLRs, covering 82.5-450mm equivalent. The HD coating improves light transmission and contrast over the standard SMC coating.
Optically adequate — sharp in the centre at mid-focal lengths but soft at 300mm. HD coating provides better contrast than SMC-coated predecessors. Weather-resistant construction. No optical stabilisation — relies on in-body SR. The f/5.8 at 300mm is very slow.
Pentax K mount with 58mm filter thread. Approximately 442g — lightweight. Weather-resistant sealing. Minimum focus distance 140cm. Quick-shift Focus System allows instant manual focus override. ED glass elements.
Available used at budget prices. The PLM version with faster AF motor is preferred. Weather resistance is a genuine plus for Pentax outdoor shooting. The f/5.8 maximum aperture at 300mm limits low-light use. A budget telephoto for Pentax users — nothing special but functional.
