Sigma's DSLR-era 135mm f/1.8 Art — one of the sharpest fast telephoto primes ever tested.
The Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art was released in 2017 and immediately set benchmarks for fast telephoto prime performance. Part of Sigma's celebrated Art line, it delivers reference-class sharpness at an aperture that provides extraordinary subject isolation at 135mm. It became the default recommendation for portrait photographers wanting the ultimate in optical quality.
Optical performance is extraordinary — among the sharpest fast primes ever tested on any platform. Sharpness is outstanding from f/1.8 across the frame. The 135mm focal length combined with f/1.8 produces beautifully smooth, creamy bokeh with three-dimensional subject separation. Chromatic aberration is virtually absent. HSM motor autofocus is fast and accurate.
Available in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sony A mounts. Filter thread is 82mm. Weight is approximately 1,130 grams — heavy for a prime lens. Build quality is excellent with TSC construction and brass bayonet mount. No weather sealing. The DG DN mirrorless version is lighter with improved AF, but this DSLR version is optically equivalent.
Good availability on the used market at attractive prices, especially since the DG DN version exists. Check AF accuracy and smooth focus ring. The weight is significant but the optical quality justifies it. One of the finest portrait lenses ever made — the combination of 135mm focal length, f/1.8 aperture, and this level of sharpness is genuinely extraordinary.
