Sigma's compact 30mm prime for mirrorless APS-C and MFT — budget-friendly with good optics.
The Sigma 30mm f/2.8 DN Art was originally released in 2012 as part of Sigma's compact DN series for mirrorless cameras, later updated under the Art designation. Designed for APS-C mirrorless mounts, it provides a 45mm equivalent field of view — a versatile normal perspective. The compact size and affordable price make it an excellent entry-level prime.
Optical performance is good for the price. Sharpness is respectable from f/2.8 and very good by f/4. The Art branding indicates Sigma's quality tier. Chromatic aberration is well-controlled. Bokeh is acceptable with seven aperture blades. The relatively modest f/2.8 aperture limits shallow depth of field capability compared to f/1.4 alternatives.
Available in Sony E and Micro Four Thirds mounts. Filter thread is 46mm. Weight is approximately 140 grams — extremely compact and lightweight. Build quality is decent with a metal barrel. The linear motor AF is quiet and quick, suitable for both stills and video. No weather sealing and no image stabilisation.
Very affordable on the used market. Check for smooth AF operation. An excellent budget prime for Sony APS-C and MFT shooters who want a step up from kit zoom quality without spending much. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary offers a faster alternative with better low-light performance at a higher price.
