Sigma's second-generation 70-200mm f/2.8 for full-frame DSLRs — a budget professional telephoto zoom.
The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO DG AF II is Sigma's second-generation constant-aperture telephoto zoom for full-frame DSLRs. It competes in the professional telephoto zoom category against the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, offering similar reach and aperture at a significantly lower price point.
Optical performance is good though not quite matching the Canon L or Nikon VR equivalents. Centre sharpness is very good from f/2.8, with corners catching up by f/4. The APO designation indicates apochromatic elements for reduced chromatic aberration. Bokeh is pleasant at f/2.8, suitable for isolating subjects at events and sports.
Available in multiple mounts including Canon EF and Nikon F. Filter thread is 77mm. Weight is approximately 1,370 grams — heavy, typical of this lens class. No image stabilisation, which is a significant disadvantage against stabilised OEM equivalents. Build quality is solid with a metal barrel and tripod collar included.
Available on the used market at attractive prices, well below equivalent Canon L or Nikon VR glass. Check for AF accuracy and consistency — copy variation can be an issue. The lack of stabilisation is the main drawback. Best suited to sports and event shooters on a budget who can manage higher shutter speeds or use a monopod.
