Sony's first full-frame mirrorless — 36.4MP with E-mount, pioneering the mirrorless revolution.
The Sony Alpha A7R (ILCE-7R) was released in 2013 as the high-resolution variant of the original A7 series, featuring a 36.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor. No IBIS — in-body stabilisation was introduced in the A7R II (2015). Maximum video is 1080/60fps — no 4K. NP-FW50 battery. At approximately 465g with battery.
36.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor (35.9×24.0mm). Maximum video: 1080p/60fps (NTSC) / 50fps (PAL) — no 4K recording. No IBIS. NP-FW50 battery (modest capacity — shared with A6000 series). Approximately 465g with battery. Sony FE full-frame mount. Original A7-series first generation.
The A7R was the first 36MP mirrorless camera at launch: matching the Nikon D800's 36MP in a full-frame mirrorless body. The absence of IBIS was the primary practical limitation — at 36MP, camera shake during handheld exposures is more visible at the pixel level than with lower-resolution sensors. The A7R II (2015) addressed this with 5-axis IBIS and an improved BSI sensor.
On the used market the Sony A7R original is affordable as the first 36MP Sony FE mirrorless. Condition checks: NP-FW50 battery health, shutter count (mechanical shutter only), sensor dust (36MP makes dust more visible). No IBIS. No 4K. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount lenses.
