Sony's third-generation high-resolution mirrorless with 42.4MP and improved AF.
The Sony A7R III launched in 2017 as a major upgrade to the A7R II, nearly doubling the AF points, adding a much larger battery, and improving virtually every specification. With 42.4MP, 399-point phase-detect AF, and 5-axis IBIS, it became the default high-resolution full-frame mirrorless for landscape and studio work.
Key features include the 42.4MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 399-point phase-detect AF with Eye AF, 10fps burst, 5-axis IBIS, Pixel Shift multi-shot for 170MP composites, dual SD card slots, and significantly improved battery life over the A7R II. The NP-FZ100 battery provides around 530 shots.
The A7R III was praised as the camera that made Sony mirrorless genuinely practical for professional use, thanks to improved battery life, dual cards, and better ergonomics. It is criticised for the complex menu system and the Eye AF that was later improved dramatically in the A7R IV.
Excellent value used as the A7R IV and V have reduced prices significantly. Check shutter count, IBIS operation, and both card slots. The A7R III remains an outstanding 42MP camera. The A7R IV adds 61MP and better AF but the III is the better value.
