Sony's 61MP high-resolution flagship with Real-time Eye AF and outstanding dynamic range.
The Sony A7R IV launched in 2019 as the world's highest resolution full-frame mirrorless camera at 61MP. Building on the A7R III's success, it added Real-time Eye AF for both humans and animals, improved weather sealing, and a redesigned grip. It targets landscape, studio, and commercial photographers who demand maximum detail.
Key features include the 61MP sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range, 567-point phase-detect AF with Real-time Eye AF and tracking, 10fps burst, 5-axis IBIS, Pixel Shift multi-shot for 240MP composites, and dual UHS-II SD card slots. The body is redesigned with a larger grip and improved weather sealing.
The A7R IV is praised for extraordinary resolution and dynamic range that challenged medium format cameras, combined with excellent AF. It is criticised for demanding top-quality lenses to realise the sensor's potential, large file sizes, and noise at higher ISOs due to the small pixel pitch.
Good value used as the A7R V has superseded it. Check shutter count, IBIS operation, and both card slots. The A7R V adds AI-based AF but the A7R IV offers the same 61MP resolution at a significant discount. Both deliver extraordinary detail for landscape and commercial work.
