Tamron's popular APS-C superzoom covering 27-300mm equivalent — the classic one-lens travel solution.
The Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II is one of the most popular superzoom lenses ever produced for APS-C DSLRs. Covering a 27-300mm equivalent range, it provides a genuine one-lens solution for travel and casual photography, eliminating the need to carry or swap lenses. Multiple versions exist across Canon, Nikon, and Sony mounts.
Optical performance is acceptable for a superzoom but involves inevitable compromises. Centre sharpness is decent at moderate focal lengths, softening at the extremes. Corner performance is weak throughout. VC-equipped versions add valuable stabilisation. The 11x zoom ratio keeps the lens compact while still offering meaningful telephoto reach for casual wildlife and sports.
Available in Canon EF-S, Nikon F DX, and Sony A mounts. Filter thread is 62mm. Weight is approximately 398 grams — impressively light for the range covered. Several generations exist with improvements to coatings, AF speed, and stabilisation. Build quality is functional plastic. No weather sealing on any version.
Extremely common and affordable on the used market. Check for zoom creep and smooth AF operation. Not recommended for critical work, but unmatched for convenience when weight and space matter most. The Tamron 18-270mm extends the range further, while the 18-200mm VC III is the most refined version of this concept.
