Tamron's classic 90mm macro for Sony A-mount — the renowned SP 90mm with USD motor.
The Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro USD is the Sony A-mount version of Tamron's legendary 90mm macro lens. The SP 90mm has been in production across multiple generations since the 1970s and earned the nickname 'the portrait macro' for its dual excellence in both macro and portrait photography. The USD version adds an ultrasonic motor for faster, quieter AF.
Optical performance is excellent. Macro sharpness is outstanding with true 1:1 magnification. At portrait distances, the lens delivers very good sharpness with smooth, pleasant bokeh — the combination that earned its reputation. The 90mm focal length provides comfortable working distance for both macro subjects and portrait compositions. Chromatic aberration is well-controlled.
Sony A mount with USD ultrasonic motor. Filter thread is 58mm. Weight is approximately 400 grams — compact for a macro lens. Build quality is good with the SP designation. No image stabilisation — relies on Sony's SteadyShot INSIDE body stabilisation. The Di designation confirms compatibility with both APS-C and full-frame A-mount bodies.
Available on the used market at reasonable prices. Check AF accuracy, smooth manual focus ring, and clean optics. An outstanding macro lens that doubles as a portrait prime. The Sony A-mount version benefits from body-based stabilisation. Can be adapted to Sony E-mount via LA-EA5 with full AF. The Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro VC USD is the stabilised equivalent.
