Fujifilm's second-generation X100 with improved AF, X-Trans sensor, and acclaimed rendering.
The Fujifilm X100S was released in February 2013 as the second-generation X100, replacing the original X100's contrast-only AF system with a phase-detection hybrid approach — combining on-sensor phase-detection points with contrast detection — enabling 0.1s AF acquisition, a significant improvement over the original. The 16.3MP X-Trans CMOS II sensor introduced Fujifilm's second-generation X-Trans array, providing improved high-ISO rendering and better moiré resistance than conventional Bayer patterns. The fixed 23mm f/2.0 lens (35mm full-frame equivalent) and hybrid OVF/EVF are retained from the X100.
The 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor incorporates on-sensor phase-detection points for fast hybrid AF. The fixed 23mm f/2.0 Fujinon lens covers a 35mm full-frame equivalent field of view. The hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder switches between an optical tunnel view with electronic overlay and full electronic EVF mode. 1080p video records at 60p and 30p. Body weight approximately 445g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot. The lens is fixed — there is no interchangeable mount. Battery is the NP-95.
The X100S's hybrid AF addressed the original X100's most widely criticised limitation: the slow contrast-detect AF performance. The X-Trans CMOS II sensor's colour filter array arrangement eliminates the moiré that conventional Bayer sensors require an OLPF to suppress, providing better fine-detail resolution than OLPF-equipped sensors at equivalent resolution. The 35mm equivalent field of view is the classic street and documentary focal length. The optical viewfinder with electronic overlay provides the rangefinder workflow that the X100 series is known for.
On the used market the X100S is affordable as an established X100-series model with hybrid AF. The X100T (2014) added a classic film simulation dial and further EVF improvements. Condition checks: hybrid OVF/EVF switching mechanism, fixed lens barrel for any play or alignment issues, NP-95 battery health — shared with the X100 original — and overall body condition. Fixed lens; the 23mm f/2.0 Fujinon is permanently attached and cannot be replaced.
