Fujifilm's latest X100 with 40MP sensor, IBIS, and the same beloved design language.
The Fujifilm X100VI was announced in February 2024 as the sixth-generation X100 compact, upgrading the sensor from the X100V's 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 to the 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR used in the X-T5. Most significantly, the X100VI added in-body image stabilisation for the first time in the X100 series — rated at 6 stops — providing handheld stability at the fixed 23mm focal length that the X100V could not achieve. Strong announcement demand drove substantial production backlogs that persisted through 2024.
The 40.2MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor pairs with the X-Processor 5. The hybrid optical-electronic viewfinder is built in. 6.2K video records at up to 30fps in 10-bit 4:2:2; 4K records at up to 60fps. The 6-stop IBIS provides handheld stability for stills and video at the fixed 23mm focal length. A 4-stop built-in ND filter continues from the X100V for aperture control in bright daylight. The body maintains weather sealing; full lens front-element protection requires the optional AR-X100 adapter ring and PRF-49 filter. Battery life approximately 430 shots using the NP-W126S, body weight approximately 521g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The X100VI's practical advances over the X100V are the sensor upgrade and IBIS. The 40.2MP sensor provides substantially more resolution for cropping and large-format output than the X100V's 26.1MP. IBIS at 6 stops transforms the practical working envelope for video and low-light stills — a fixed-lens camera with effective stabilisation is more versatile for handheld use than the X100V. For photographers whose X100V image quality was sufficient and who primarily shoot stills in good light, the 40MP upgrade is incremental; for video-oriented users, IBIS is a qualitative step forward.
The X100VI holds strong used value due to high demand and Fujifilm's historically constrained production of the X100 series. Condition checks: the two-way tilt screen hinge, front lens element for cleaning marks or haze, IBIS operation, and AR-X100 adapter presence for buyers requiring full weather sealing. The NP-W126S battery life is moderate — a spare battery is advisable for full-day use. The X100V is available at lower prices without IBIS or the 40MP sensor. Fixed-lens design; no interchangeable mount.
